What is a septic tank?

Plastic septic tank.

"Septic tank" is a term that gets used for almost any septic system.

In reality, it's something more specific — an underground tank that receives wastewater from your home, separates solids, and pipes liquid downstream for further treatment.

A septic tank never works alone. What comes after it — the drain field, or an additional treatment component — is just as important as the tank itself.

That's where we come in.

We don't just source a septic tank and leave you to figure out the rest. We evaluate your site, make sure the right system is designed around it, and coordinate the installation.

And if you need someone to service it down the line, we offer that too.

A septic tank is always part of a larger system

When a septic tank is used, it's typically part of one of these systems:

  • Septic tank with a drain field
Wastewater flows from the tank into the drain field, where the soil completes the treatment process. This is the simplest and most common system, but it requires adequate space and suitable soil.
  • Septic tank with advanced treatment
More challenging sites may need a septic tank, plus one or more advanced treatment units. They add additional treatment stages so wastewater can be safely dispersed in the ground or discharged to a watercourse.

The type of system you need depends on your site — the available space, soil conditions, and where your treated water will ultimately go.
