What is the Ecoflo compact biofilter?

Ecoflo, the non-electric sewage treatment plant in the UK.

The Ecoflo compact biofilter is an energy-free sewage treatment plant designed and manufactured by our team at Premier Tech Water and Environment.

The "Ecoflo" name sometimes gets used to describe any sewage treatment plant. In reality, ours is a specific technology — and we're the only company that installs it.

The system treats wastewater by passing it through a coconut husk filter. Here's how:

  1. The Ecoflo biofilter receives wastewater from your septic tank.
  2. Wastewater percolates through coconut husk fragments inside the biofilter.
  3. The filter acts as a physical barrier, trapping contaminants.
  4. Naturally occurring bacteria break down pollutants.
  5. After filtration, wastewater is safely discharged to a compact drainage field or surface water.

Where the Ecoflo compact biofilter works best

The Ecoflo sewage treatment plant is a natural fit for a range of properties, including those:

  • with a septic tank requiring an upgrade
  • without space for a full-sized drainage field
  • where watercourse discharge is the only practical option
  • without easy access to mains electricity
  • with variable or seasonal occupancy, including holiday lets and Airbnbs

The simple way to upgrade a non-compliant septic tank

Septic tank connected to the Ecoflo compact biofilter in the UK.

Since January 2020, the General Binding Rules have prohibited septic tanks from discharging directly to streams, rivers, ditches, and drains that lead to watercourses.

If your septic tank discharges straight to surface water, it needs to be upgraded.

In many cases, a full replacement isn't necessary. Connecting the Ecoflo compact biofilter to your existing septic tank adds a treatment stage that can make your discharge compliant. It's often the least disruptive and most cost-effective solution.

There is one condition: your current septic tank needs to be in good working order. If it's not, it may need to be replaced.

To find the most practical way to bring your system into compliance, get in touch for a free site assessment.

Versatility and compliance for challenging sites

Trenching for wastewater discharge to a drainage field.

The Ecoflo compact biofilter is certified for two discharge methods:

  • Smaller drainage field
By adding a secondary treatment stage, the Ecoflo compact biofilter significantly reduces the size of the drainage field you need. This offers a solution for small gardens, irregular plots, and constrained sites where a standard drainage field isn't possible.
  • Watercourse
The Ecoflo compact biofilter is certified to discharge treated wastewater directly to a nearby stream, river, or ditch. This opens a pathway to compliance for properties where no drainage field is possible.

Our free site assessment will confirm which discharge method suits your property. Tell us about your situation and we'll take it from there.

We have the right tank for your property

We offer the Ecoflo compact biofilter in a range of models to suit different types of properties.

Sizing is based on the number of bedrooms in your home, not the number of people currently living there. That's the standard set by British Water Flows and Loads guidelines, and it applies to every off-mains system in the UK.

You don't need to figure this out on your own. When you get in touch, we'll explain which tank size is right for you and why.

5/5 on Google...

Recently had a sewage treatment plant installed (24 person). The service was outstanding from start to finish.

Phil carefully went through options. The installation team were extremely professional, efficient, and friendly. They really worked hard throughout the four/five days. Clear explanations were given on how to manage the system.

The plant itself has so far exceeded our expectations and we would highly recommend this product and company.
