"Septic tank" is a term that gets used for almost any off-mains drainage system. In reality, it's something more specific — an underground tank that receives wastewater from your home, separates solids, and pipes liquid downstream for further treatment.
A septic tank never works alone. What comes after it — the drainage field, or an additional treatment component — is just as important as the tank itself.

A septic tank is always part of a larger system
When a septic tank is used, it's typically part of one of these systems:
- Septic tank with a drainage field
Wastewater flows from the tank into the ground, where the soil completes the treatment process. This is the simplest system, but it requires adequate space and suitable soil conditions. - Septic tank with the Ecoflo compact biofilter
The Ecoflo compact biofilter sits downstream of the septic tank, adding a secondary treatment stage. Treated water can then go to a smaller drainage field, or directly to a river, stream, or ditch.
The right system depends on your site — the available space, soil conditions, and where your treated water will ultimately go.
