What is phosphorus removal from wastewater?

In order to protect sensitive environments and to preserve our thriving ecosystems, local authorities and environment agencies across the UK are now stipulating the use of wastewater treatment systems that significantly reduce the amount of phosphorus compounds in effluent discharge.

Phosphorus removal in this sense, is a wastewater treatment option for properties in such ecologically sensitive areas, where these strict effluent standards are required to prevent eutrophication of lakes, rivers and natural water streams.

With chemical dosing to significantly reduce phosphorus content in the effluent (up to 90% removal), our Rewatec Solido Smart +P provides a reliable and efficient solution for wastewater treatment. The Solido Smart +P safely isolates phosphorus compounds to ensure treated wastewater never contributes to harmful algae blooms in nearby watercourses.

The Solido Smart +P  can cater for properties up to 25 people (PE).

Example applications

  • areas requiring reduced phosphorus effluent
  • primary residences
  • seasonal residences
  • small residential developments
  • small commercial developments

How do we remove phosphorus from wastewater?

Inside the Rewatec Solido Smart +P, intermittent aeration cycles break down solids and provide oxygen to microorganisms that feed on organic wastewater pollutants.

After aeration, remaining solids – including microorganisms – sink to the bottom of the tank. Some remain inside the tank to treat the next batch of wastewater and are known as activated sludge. Remaining solids are extracted and returned to the primary treatment tank or a sludge storage tank.

During periods of very high flow, the system can shift from a batch-flow strategy to a continuous-flow strategy with intermittent discharge. This versatility eliminates the need to over design the system to cope with fluctuating flow rates, and it has no effect on treatment performance.

Receiving system and final discharge

As solids settle on the bottom of the Rewatec Solido Smart +P, treated wastewater forms at the surface. Polyaluminium chloride (a chemical often used in swimming pools) is sporadically dosed by a chamber inside the tank to safely and cost-effectively remove phosphorus from the wastewater.

Solido Smart +P maintenance

Protect your investment in your Rewatec Solido Smart +P tank by having it regularly inspected, pumped and the chemical dosing replenished by a qualified service professional.

The frequency of service depends on the size of your tank, the amount of wastewater your property generates, and the environmental regulations in your area. It is best to speak with a local professional to determine servicing that is right for you.

When your service provider visits your property to inspect your system, they should:

  • check for cracks and leaks in the tank
  • measure the scum and sludge layers
  • pump the SBR tank, if needed
  • clean the effluent filter in the outlet pipe
  • replenish the chemical dosing chamber
  • keep and update maintenance records for your system
  • explain any areas of concern and recommend next steps
