What are washdown separators?
As the washdown separator fills with contaminated water, sediment such as silt settles at the bottom of the tank below the invert of the pipe. When the water level reaches the outlet pipe, it safely leaves the separator and continues to the drainage system - leaving all forms of sediment at the bottom of the tank.
If required, a silt trap can also be installed upstream of the washdown separator to limit any potential blockages, damage or flooding in the tank.
The Environment Agency requires that discharge from washdown applications must discharge to a foul drainage system.
Example applications
- car washes
- pressure washing facilities
- transportation depots
- car dealerships
- truck dealerships
- farm equipment dealerships
How do washdown separators work?
Step 1
Contaminated water enters the unit where the heavier solids and silt settle to the bottom of the tank.
Step 2
The lighter liquids and hydrocarbons will rise to the surface and be retained within the tank.
Step 3
Treated water will exit the separator via the outlet.
